Provost's Author Support Fund: Announcement

DATE:     August 25, 2008
MEMO TO:     Deans, Directors and Department Heads
FROM:     Thomas Miller, Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs
RE:     Provost's Author Support Fund

I am writing to announce the availability of subvention support made possible through the Provost's Author Support Fund. The purpose of this fund is to help defray publication charges to faculty members who have written book manuscripts or who have produced other creative work which, if published, would likely bring distinction to the author(s) and to the University.  Funds are awarded on a competitive basis as described below and on our website (http://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/authors/letter.htm).  Please circulate this notice to faculty in your college/department.

Background: Faculty members who have written manuscripts for publication as books or who have produced other creative works are sometimes required by publishers to pay subvention charges or other production charges for the work to be published.  This practice is especially true of some of the university presses as they address the practical realities of publishing books having a limited readership.

Recognizing the financial impact of this practice on faculty authors, the Office of the Provost has established the Provost's Author Support Fund. Manuscripts or other creative work accepted for publication and accompanied by formal reviews (initiated and implemented by the publisher) will be considered.  Awards generally do not exceed $1500 and are more likely to be in the $500-$1,000 range.

Eligibility: Persons eligible to apply for funds are faculty or academic professionals whose position responsibilities include the expectation of research and publication, and who hold appointments in units reporting directly or indirectly to the Provost.

Review: A review committee appointed by the Provost will meet to review proposals and to recommend awards. Guidelines for selection, which were drafted by the review committee, are posted on the website listed below.

Application:Authors who wish to apply for funding should submit a formal request to the Office of the Provost using the suggested format.

Deadline:The deadline for receipt of applications is November 14, 2008.

Any questions regarding the Provost's Author Support Fund may be directed to my office (621-5066).
