The Innovative Spaces for Learning and Engagement (ISLE) Program encourages departments to transform existing rooms into innovative learning spaces by providing expertise and up to $50K in matching funds. These spaces, designed through a collaborative effort of department/college personnel and representatives of the UA Classroom Committee, are intended to improve student learning and the student experience by creating opportunities for active collaborative learning. Departments with departmentally-controlled spaces that may be suitable for renovations are encouraged to submit proposals.

The following departments were awarded ISLE Program grants on August 31, 2018:

  • Education
  • Soil, Water and Environmental Sciences
  • Math
  • Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences
  • Mining Engineering

An ISLE Program Information Session was held on May 15, 2018. The slides from the session are available here.

The ISLE Program is supported by the Provost's Investment Fund.

WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS AT THIS TIME.

Guidelines for ISLE Program Grants

(Click here to download the ISLE Program Guidelines and Instructions.)

Please carefully read the following guidelines before you begin to prepare a proposal for an ISLE Program grant.

  • The renovated space must be primarily dedicated to students with an emphasis on student collaborations to improve learning.
  • The department should plan to devote the room to a minimum of 25-30 hours per week of formal and informal learning opportunities including a minimum of 8-10 hours of formal learning (i.e. credit-bearing courses).
  • The space should not be used primarily for faculty meetings or graduate student workspace.
  • All UA academic units are eligible to submit proposals.
  • One proposal per department will be accepted following each call for proposals.
  • Proposals are due on August 1, 2018 for the first call and proposals are due on December 3, 2018 for the second call.
  • The department retains control of the room, assumes responsibility for maintaining the facilities and equipment with internal resources or through external contracts and agrees to report regularly on the utilization of the space.
  • The grant provides up to $50,000 in dollar-for-dollar matching funds per project. Costs that exceed the matching funds are the responsibility of the department.
