Early Review for Tenure or Continuing Status |
I wish to clarify a question brought to my attention regarding the early review of faculty or
academic professionals for tenure or continuing status.
With regard to tenure-eligible faculty, the University Handbook for Appointed Personnel
3.12.04 currently states:
"An assistant professor may be recommended for promotion, for renewal or for other change in
status at any time through the sixth year of tenure-eligible service."
With regard to continuing-eligible professionals, the University Handbook for Appointed
Personnel 4.10.03 currently states:
"Continuing-eligible professionals may be considered and recommended for continuing status
during any year of service, but they must be considered during their sixth (seventh if a
parental delay has been utilized) year of service if, by then, continuing status has not been
awarded."
Based on the January 31, 2000, recommendation of the Academic Council, tenure-eligible
faculty or continuing-eligible professionals may be considered for early review for
tenure/continuing status under extraordinary circumstances. If the outcome of this early
review is a recommendation to deny tenure or continuing status the faculty member or
professional will not receive a terminal-year appointment and may reapply, without prejudice,
for tenure or continuing status during the mandatory review year (usually sixth year) of
tenure-eligible or continuing-eligible service.
I will apply this philosophy to any tenure or continuing status cases currently under
review.
