Kabir Hossain

School of Plant Sciences

My career goal is to become a professor and therefore I'm applying to the CIRTL Postdoc Pathway Program to improve my teaching skills. Through discussions with my postdoc adviser at UA, I recognized that active learning is not only an effective teaching tool for students, but also a very useful tool to improve the experience for starting assistant professors because it can enhance the confidence in the classroom and lessen the teaching anxiety that many share at the beginning of their faculty career.

I'm also enthusiastic about mastering evidence-based teaching practices as a quantitative guide to refining and improving my teaching style and effectiveness. Although I haven’t formally taught yet, my journey as a researcher and mentor has shown me the significant impact that effective teaching can have on students. The co-teaching experience in my subject area will prepare me to define meaningful broader impacts in grants when I start my independent career as faculty, and it will also help me develop a teaching philosophy that creates an inclusive and supportive classroom environment. As a person of color, my interest in applying evidence-based teaching techniques goes beyond just grant writing and will allow me to create engaging and effective educational experiences that address to the diverse backgrounds of students, ensuring their success and growth. Furthermore, I aim to use the program's resources and networking opportunities to enhance my applications for academic positions that emphasize both research and teaching excellence.
