Survey Goal
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) obtains information from hundreds of four-year colleges and universities nationwide about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for learning and personal development. Since 2006, the University of Arizona has been participating in the NSSE survey to understand how our students’ experiences compare to those of our peers. The University of Arizona uses its NSSE data to identify aspects of the undergraduate experience inside and outside the classroom that can be improved through changes in policies and practices more consistent with good practices in undergraduate education.
Survey Results
NSSE results provide a wealth of data that informs accreditation self-studies, benchmarking and peer comparison efforts, faculty and staff development, strategic planning, and institutional improvement initiatives. Importantly, NSSE provides key metrics used to assess progress toward the University of Arizona’s Academic Success Goals, offering evidence of where students are thriving and where additional support or investment may be needed. The results also support recruitment and communication efforts and guide student success and support initiatives. In addition, NSSE offers insight into how undergraduate students spend their time NSSE measures student perceptions across four key engagement indicators:
- Academic challenge
- Learning with peers
- Experiences with faculty
- Campus environment
